Art is Alive invites you to showcase your creativity – September 1st 2010
The southwest’s brand new art initiative provides opportunities for artists, photographers, filmmakers and more
Bristol is an innovative city packed with innovative individuals, but rarely do these communities of artists, musicians, filmmakers and photographers intermingle. Art is Alive is an initiative that aims to change that by introducing imaginative practitioners across all the disciplines to one another and find ways to collaborate, promote the talent and develop to achieve new heights of creativity.
Art is Alive was conceived by Mike T. Cilliers, a former CEO for an events and artist management company in South Africa. Mike has lived in Bristol since 2008 and believes his own inspired talent lies in providing artists, musicians, fashion designers and other creative practitioners with a showcase and platform.
“If you have a talent, you are driven to create, but not every creative person has the ability to take it further, and that’s where we come in. My aim is to assist people with talent to be able to create a sustainable career with their ‘gift’.”
The initiative hosts a monthly social event that provides the opportunity to drink cocktails, listen to live music, take in some art and have exciting conversations with other creative people and businesses with an interest in the arts.
“We believe businesses and creators have the potential to benefit by association. Our objective is to expose local talent and business to a national and global audience.”
The first of these events was the launch party on Wednesday 21st July. Mike and his associates Vijay Nagaraj and Anne Mainstone transformed the lower floor of the Berkeley Square Hotel bar into an atmospheric venue with the best elements of a laidback house party combined with the glitz of an upmarket cocktail bar.
“It’s when you mix things up that you find ideas begin to happen,” Mike says.
Artist and fashion designer Huw Richard Evans displayed his glorious landscape paintings while jazz singer Cathy Jones and folk singer Hawthorn provided the musical entertainment.
The next event will be on September 1st, in the Square Club at the Berkeley Square Hotel, a fitting venue as the first Art Hotel in Bristol, with its own gallery. The ambiance will be just as vibrant, with sets from singer/songwriter Ian Perry and saxophonist Tom Ranby followed by Canadian musician Pearl Harvey. Artists include Monika Matysik, a photographer who creates distorted images with a painterly quality, and Grace Ekall, a fashion illustrator and designer who experiments with textiles and other materials. The night promises to be eclectic, fun and imaginative.
The second Art is Alive event will be at the Square Club (Berkeley Square Hotel), Clifton, Bristol on 1st September 2010. This is an open invitation, but attendance is by RSVP only. If you’d like to be part of it, get in touch.
Address: 15 Berkeley Square, Bristol, Avon BS8 1HB.
